Embraer E2 Jets Achieve 120min ETOPS Certification Across Key Global Regulators

Embraer's new-generation E190-E2 and E195-E2 aircraft have been granted 120-minute Extended Twin-Engine Operations (ETOPS) certification by major aviation authorities, including Brazil's ANAC, the US Federal Aviation Administration, and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency. This significant milestone underscores the advanced design and system maturity of the E2 jets, broadening their operational capabilities and market appeal.

Arjan Meijer, CEO of Embraer Commercial Aircraft, highlighted the strategic importance of the ETOPS certification, particularly for expanding sales opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. With the ability to operate routes requiring up to 120 minutes of diversion time, airlines can now utilize more direct, efficient, and fuel-saving flight paths while gaining access to a wider array of diversion airports.

The certification's achievement was initially anticipated at an earlier date but faced delays due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, which significantly reduced aircraft operations and, consequently, the pace at which the E2 fleet accumulated the necessary flying hours for certification.

ETOPS certification represents a critical development in civil aviation, enabling twin-engine aircraft to operate safely over distances previously accessible only to aircraft with three or four engines. This includes flights over water, remote areas, or routes that were once restricted, thereby enhancing the operational flexibility and efficiency of airlines using Embraer's E2 jets.
