TweetIn a transformative leap towards enhancing its fleet efficiency and expanding its global footprint, Thai Airways International has confirmed an order for 45 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. This substantial acquisition signals the airline's forward-looking strategy to embrace more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft, specifically opting for the 787-9 model to spearhead growth and inaugurate new routes throughout the dynamic airspace of Southeast Asia.
Thai Airways' Strategic Move Bolsters Efficiency and Environmental Commitments
The partnership between Boeing and Thai Airways marks a pivotal moment for the carrier, underscoring its ambition to modernize its widebody fleet and extend its international network. Chai Eamsiri, CEO of Thai Airways, emphasized the dual objective of the new Dreamliners equipped with GEnx engines: achieving the airline's and Thailand's carbon neutrality targets by 2050 and enhancing customer service. "The acquisition of the 787 Dreamliners will not only elevate our service quality but also contribute significantly to the national economy's growth," Eamsiri noted.
With an existing fleet comprising widebody jets like the 777s and 787s and serving nearly 60 destinations globally, Thai Airways is set to augment its operational efficiency with the addition of the 787-9 Dreamliners. These aircraft are celebrated for reducing fuel consumption and emissions by as much as 25% compared to older models, representing a significant step towards sustainable aviation.
Brad McMullen, Boeing's Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, lauded the deal as a testament to the enduring partnership between Boeing and Thai Airways.
"This strategic investment in the 787 Dreamliner underscores Thai Airways' commitment to operating a modern, efficient fleet. It's a move that will enable the airline to meet increasing demand, boost tourism and trade, and unlock new growth avenues,"
McMullen stated.
Expanding Horizons with the 787-9 Dreamliner
Scheduled for finalization in December 2023, the order will see the 787-9 model, which is 20 feet longer than its predecessor, the 787-8, allowing Thai Airways to carry nearly 20% more passengers over greater distances. This expansion builds on the success of the 787-8, which has pioneered over 390 new nonstop routes globally since its debut in 2011.
A Symbiotic Relationship Enhancing Thailand's Aviation Landscape
For over 60 years, Boeing has played a crucial role in advancing Thailand's aviation sector. Through its enduring presence in Bangkok and various societal contributions, Boeing has demonstrated its commitment to the country's development. This includes supporting STEM education to nurture future talent, advocating for programs that empower individuals with disabilities, and promoting sustainable practices that align with environmental and economic objectives.
Boeing's Vision for Southeast Asia's Aviation Future
According to Boeing's 2023 Commercial Market Outlook for Southeast Asia, the region's widebody fleet is poised to triple over the next two decades. This growth is fueled by a demand for nearly 800 airplanes, highlighting the strategic importance of models like the 787 Dreamliner family and the 777X, along with freighter variants. This forecast underscores the burgeoning opportunities within Southeast Asia's aviation industry, with Thai Airways' latest order exemplifying the region's ambitious trajectory towards modernization and sustainability.
