Feb. 20, 2024 by AirfieldNews
TweetBreeze Airways has recently announced a significant expansion to its fleet with an order for 10 additional Airbus A220-300 aircraft, escalating its total firm orders for this model to 90. This move positions Breeze as the world's third-largest customer for the Airbus A220, underscoring the airline's ambitious growth strategy and commitment to enhancing its service offerings.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft at Airbus, praised the partnership, highlighting the A220's pivotal role in Breeze's mission to bridge underserved routes across the United States. "The A220's world-class performance capabilities make it the ideal choice for Breeze's innovative service approach, offering efficient operations and an exceptional passenger experience while maintaining the lowest carbon and noise footprints in its class," de Saint-Exupéry remarked. This endorsement reinforces the aircraft's reputation as a game-changer in modern aviation, offering unparalleled value and opportunities for airlines.
The A220 is celebrated for its eco-friendly and cost-efficient operations, capable of flying up to 3,600 nautical miles (approximately 6,700 kilometres) non-stop. It boasts a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, positioning it as the only aircraft specifically designed for the 100-150 seat market. Equipped with advanced aerodynamics, state-of-the-art materials, and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF™ engines, the A220 not only reduces noise by 50% but also cuts NOx emissions by about 40% compared to industry standards. In line with Airbus's sustainability goals, the A220 can operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with plans to enable 100% SAF usage by 2030.
Since receiving its first Airbus A220 in December 2021, Breeze Airways has been steadily increasing its A220 fleet, which stood at 20 aircraft by the end of January 2024. The airline has confirmed its transition to an all-A220 fleet for commercial operations by the end of 2024, emphasizing its commitment to operational efficiency and environmental stewardship.
The Airbus A220 continues to gain traction globally, with more than 300 units delivered to 20 airlines across five continents, including the recent expansion into Oceania. The aircraft's versatility makes it ideal for both regional and long-distance routes, having already served over 100 million passengers. Currently, the A220 flies over 1,350 routes to more than 400 destinations worldwide. With around 30 customers ordering over 900 A220 aircraft to date, its leading position in the small single-aisle market is unequivocally confirmed, marking a new era of sustainable and efficient air travel.
