TweetSpirit Airlines will launch three new routes from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas (LAS) in August 2022. By adding these new services, Spirit will have increased by 30% its offer from Las Vegas compared to last year. Let’s investigate further.

Spirit announced today an expansion out west from Las Vegas. Starting in August 2022, the low-cost airline will offer new routes to Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), Boise Airport (BOI), and Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). The carrier will compete with Frontier, Allegiant Air, and Southwest on these routes.
The route to Albuquerque will begin on August 3, 2022, and Spirit will offer one daily service. Two days later, the airline will start its flights to Boise, also with daily flights. Finally, on August 10, Spirit will launch two daily flights to Reno. John Kirby, Spirit Airlines Vice President of Network Planning, said,
"Announcing three new markets is an exciting milestone for Spirit Airlines and our Guests as we deliver more high-value options for travel between the bright lights of Vegas and the huge variety of beautiful places to visit in New Mexico, Idaho, and Northern Nevada."
Spirit also announced two additional routes from Las Vegas in the last few months. These services go to Memphis (daily flights, starting on April 20) and Salt Lake City (twice daily, launching on May 26).
Increasing its presence in Las Vegas
Spirit Airlines currently offers 391 flights per week out of Las Vegas, according to Cirium. It flies to 36 destinations across the United States. Sacramento, Seattle, San Diego, Portland, Los Angeles, and Dallas Fort Worth are Spirit’s main destinations from Harry Reid International, flying three times per day to these cities.
Once Spirit Airlines adds the new services, it will have 41 nonstop destinations and up to 75 peak-day departures. This total represents an almost 30% year-over-year increase to and from Las Vegas. Moreover, guests traveling from Albuquerque, Boise, and Reno will also have connectivity opportunities through Las Vegas. Chris Jones, LAS Chief Marketing Officer, said,
"Spirit Airlines, LAS's second-busiest carrier in 2021, continues to invest in the Las Vegas market and provide opportunities for travelers to experience this world-class destination. We look forward to soon welcoming even more visitors from Reno, Boise, and Albuquerque. These are three great markets within our region, each of which should show two-way demand among vacationers, sports fans, students, and business travelers."
The competition
Spirit will compete with Frontier Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Southwest on these routes. Frontier offers four flights per week in the route to Reno; Allegiant serves the three routes flying twice per week to Albuquerque and Boise and four times per week to Reno; finally, Southwest also flies on these three routes, and it is the main operator. Southwest has 20 weekly flights to Albuquerque, 14 to Boise, and 46 to Reno, according to data provided by Cirium.
In Albuquerque, Southwest and American Airlines are the top main players. As of March, Southwest has 139 flights per week, while American Airlines has 102. Spirit is not currently flying to this airport. Alaska Airlines is the leading carrier in Boise, with 180 scheduled flights per week, followed by Delta. Finally, Southwest is the primary operator in Reno with 130 flights per week. Spirit doesn’t operate in these airports at the moment, as well.
